Founded in May 2001 in Sacramento, California, Africamix uses the unique combination of multicultural art and music celebrations to enhance the general well-being of children and their families.

Interspersed among the performances are guest speakers from children’s rights organizations giving dynamic presentations designed to educate, motivate, and, hopefully, captivate and inspire the audience.

Musicians have an important role in enhancing the general well-being of children and families. Young musicians are recognizing that child abuse is a community  problem, which can be prevented if they involve themeselves through various types of individual, neighborhood, or community event.

There are significant potential benefits of aligning musicians in promoting public awareness of the abuse and neglect of children

Productively engaging musicians as partners with community based organizations maximizes the promotion of public awareness of child abuse and neglect and the resources available for intervention and treatment

Numerous studies indicate a correlation between child abuse and crime, mental illness, medical problems, drug and alcohol abuse, runaways, youth suicides, teenage prostitution, juvenile sex offenders, education and employment problems, and other social problems. This recognition is in part responsible for the increasing demand for prevention of child abuse as a means of preventing many of the overwhelming social ills society is currently facing.

There is a growing realization that child abuse prevention is cost effective from a public policy perspective. The estimated cost of social services, criminal justice, health, mental health, and other systems intervention for the untreated or undertreated victims of child abuse is enormous. These costs include such things as medical treatment, therapy, foster care, and incarceration. Prevention is recognized as a long-term approach to reducing the demands on the overburdened intervention and response systems. (Child Abuse Prevention  Handbook)
